The Redbuds formed in 2012 when sisters Laura and Allie Smith and Virginia Pishioneri decided to busk to the Clintonville Farmers’ Market outside of Global Gallery every Saturday Morning. What started as something casual, it became apparent quickly there was something more real happening. Their shared love of Appalachian folk music, Woody Guthrie and American roots music gave them a vast catalogue of songs to pull from and a chance to reimagine old music in new ways. For the next two years, The Redbuds played a wide array of venues, including birthday parties, grocery stores, farmers' markets, music venues, and local festivals, such as ComFest, Duck Creek Log Jam, and The Central Ohio Folk Music Festival. Their first album, "The Redbuds", was recorded and released in 2013.
The original trio disbanded in 2014 when Allie left the country to move to the Caribbean as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer.
In 2019 Rachel Scott, an old friend from Laura & Allie’s high school moved back to Columbus from Boston and reached out about playing music. Due to the pandemic it took a while to come to fruition, but in 2022 the Redbuds reformed with Laura on guitar, Allie on fiddle and mandolin, and Rachel Scott on upright bass and banjo.
Today, you can find the trio playing all around Ohio at various venues and festivals. Their second album, “Every Little Once in a While” was released in the fall of 2025 and features original tunes, traditional folk music and songs from the folk music canon by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Elizabeth Cotten.
